Auckland based rugby league team the Warriors have played two games under the roof, beating fellow NRL team the Brisbane Broncos on both occasions. The first match was a pre-season trial in February 2013, the first time an NRL game was played in Dunedin, and the second one was in February 2014 when the Warriors beat the Broncos 48 4 and retained the Trans-Tasman Cup.
The first league test match to be held in Dunedin since 1928 was played at the Stadium in November 2014 when the Kiwis beat England 16 – 14. The frenetic game was played in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.
A post-match survey undertaken by Dunedin Venues indicated that just over half of the tickets sold were purchased by Dunedin residents with the rest coming from out of town, with most of those from Canterbury. Of the 5% who came from overseas, most were from the UK, then Australia, USA and Germany. Approximately 5,400 visitors came to Dunedin for the test, and the average expenditure of those responding to the survey was $427 per person. The test match had a significant economic impact on the city.
