Brumbies Edge Highlanders in Tight Contest
Forsyth Barr Stadium hosted a tense and physical Super Rugby Pacific encounter as the Highlanders faced the ACT Brumbies, with the visitors securing a narrow 14–10 victory in a hard-fought battle under the roof.
In front of a passionate Dunedin crowd, the Highlanders made a strong start, controlling early territory and opening the scoring through the boot of Cameron Millar. The home side looked composed in the opening exchanges, applying pressure through their forward pack and capitalising on early opportunities to take a 3–0 lead.
The Brumbies responded with patience and structure, gradually working their way into the match. A milestone moment came just before halftime, as captain Ryan Lonergan crossed for a try in his 100th Super Rugby appearance, giving the visitors a 7–3 advantage at the break.
The second half continued in similar fashion, with both sides locked in a physical arm wrestle. The Highlanders regained the lead midway through the half, with a well-taken try to shift the scoreboard to 10–7 and ignite the home crowd.
However, the decisive moment came late in the contest. With just minutes remaining, the Brumbies capitalised on a turnover, building pressure through multiple phases before flanker Luke Reimer powered over for the match-winning try. The conversion pushed the visitors ahead 14–10, a lead they would not relinquish.
The match was defined by its intensity, with both teams showcasing strong defensive efforts and physicality throughout. While the Highlanders created opportunities, the Brumbies’ composure in key moments ultimately proved the difference.
Despite the result, the atmosphere inside Forsyth Barr Stadium once again highlighted the venue’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s premier sporting stages, delivering a gripping night of rugby that went down to the final minutes.
