Forsyth Barr Stadium Celebrates 15 Years of Bringing People Together
Forsyth Barr Stadium celebrates its 15th birthday on 14 August. To mark this significant occasion, the Stadium is bringing together the many folk who have been integral on its journey and recognise the people, partnerships and community that have shaped the venue since it opened in 2011.
While the Stadium has hosted some of New Zealand's most memorable sporting and entertainment events, Interim CEO Rachael Jenkins said the milestone was about much more than just the headline makers.
"This birthday is about the people, partnerships and memories that have filled our Stadium over the last 15 years," said Jenkins.
"While many people remember the major concerts and international sporting moments that have brought visitors to the city and delivered significant economic benefits for the region, some of our proudest achievements have happened away from the spotlight. They're the opportunities we've created for community groups, local charities, businesses, young athletes and families, and the experiences delivered every day by our dedicated team."
Over the past 15 years, Forsyth Barr Stadium has welcomed millions of visitors through its gates and hosted 29 major concerts, more than 30 international sporting matches, Rugby World Cup fixtures, FIFA Women's World Cup matches, conferences, exhibitions, celebrations and community events.
Beyond the headline events, the stadium has supported 228 community events through its Community Access Grant funding, enabling schools, charities, clubs and community organisations to access a world-class venue.
The Stadium has also provided opportunities for charities to raise vital funds through events such as Relay for Life and Toss the Boss, while thousands of children have experienced the thrill of playing under the roof through events including Children's Day and Movie Magic.
Alongside its community impact, Forsyth Barr Stadium has played an important role in attracting visitors and generating a significant economic boost to the city.
Major sporting fixtures and entertainment events have drawn audiences from across New Zealand and beyond, who support local accommodation providers, hospitality businesses, retailers and tourism operators.
From hosting Rugby World Cup 2011 matches attended by more than 100,000 fans to three sold-out Ed Sheeran concerts, and memorable performances by international artists including Elton John and P!NK, these events have helped showcase Dunedin on a national and international stage while generating more than $400 million in direct additional expenditure for Dunedin.
The team at Forsyth Barr Stadium has worked alongside local event organisers to nurture and grow events that have grown alongside the venue and become popular fixtures on Dunedin's events calendar. We’re proud to be home to Dunedin Craft Beer and Food Festival, Moana Nui, NatureDome and Party on the Pitch to name a few.
As the Stadium marks its 15th birthday, the celebration will acknowledge the many people and organisations who have contributed to its journey and look ahead to the opportunities still to come.
